Refrigerator Noise - Gurgling

Gurgling Noise in a JennAir Refrigerator

Hearing a refrigerator noise - gurgling sound can be surprising, but it is often a normal part of cooling. This guide explains what those sounds mean, how to distinguish typical operation from issues, simple checks you can do at home, and maintenance tips to keep your refrigerator running quietly and efficiently. If you are noticing fridge gurgling more often or suspect fridge compressor gurgling, use the sections below to evaluate what is normal and what may need attention.

Understanding Gurgling Noises in Refrigerators

What causes gurgling noises? Most refrigerator noise - gurgling comes from refrigerant or defrost water moving through internal parts. As your refrigerator cycles on and off, changes in pressure and temperature can create bubbling, hissing, or fridge gurgling sounds in the sealed refrigerant lines and evaporator.

How refrigerant flow creates gurgling When the compressor starts or stops, liquid and gaseous refrigerant move between high and low pressure areas. That flow can sound like gentle bubbling or trickling behind the cabinet walls. During or after a defrost cycle, you may also hear water dripping or gurgling as it runs to the drain pan and evaporates. Fridge compressor gurgling is often brief and tied to these start-up and shut-off moments.

Cooling Cycle

  • A gurgling sound may be heard as the refrigerator shuts off after a cooling cycle, as the refrigerant flows through the cooling system's tubes.
  • When the doors are open and/or closed, a gurgling sound may also be heard. This is part of the cooling cycle.
  • Both are part of normal operation.

Opening the Doors

  • A gurgling sound may be heard when opening and closing the doors, as water equalizes in the drain tube as air is forced through it.
  • This is part of normal operation.
  • This is more common during a time of high humidity.

Maintenance Tips to Reduce Gurgling Sounds

Keep coils clean Dust on condenser coils can cause longer run times and more frequent sound cycles. Unplug the refrigerator and clean accessible coils and the grille every 6 to 12 months, more often in homes with pets or heavy dust. Refer to your Owner's Manual for instructions on how to properly clean the condenser coils.

Level the refrigerator properly Use a level to check side-to-side and front-to-back alignment, then adjust the leveling legs. A stable, level cabinet reduces vibration, helps water drain correctly, and can lessen amplification of normal operating sounds, including fridge compressor gurgling.

Maintain airflow and routine care Keep interior air vents clear, replace water filters on schedule, and avoid overpacking shelves. Leave space around the refrigerator for ventilation. After large grocery loads or frequent door openings, expect temporary increases in operating sounds until temperatures recover. These conditions can make refrigerator noise - gurgling more noticeable, but it should subside as cooling stabilizes.
