Ice has Off Taste or Odor - Freestanding Ice Maker

Possible Solutions

Does the water filter need to be changed?

We recommend replacing the filter every 9 months or when the ice-making rate starts to decrease.  The "Replace Filter" light only comes on after 9 months or 2000 gallons of water use. Customers with very hard water may need to replace their filters before these counts are reached.

Is there food stored in the storage bin?

We do not recommend storing anything other than ice in the storage bin. Storing food items could cause odor and flavor transfers to the ice.

Does your water have a high mineral count?

Minerals that are removed from water during the freezing cycle will eventually form a hard, scaly deposit in the water system.  Hard water of 15 to 20 grains/gal. (4 to 5 grains/liter), may need to be cleaned as often as every 9 months.

Does your ice maker need to be cleaned?

Regularly cleaning the system helps remove the mineral scale buildup. How often you need to clean the system depends upon how hard your water is. With hard water of 15 to 20 grains/gallon (4 to 5 grains/liter), you may need to clean the system as often as every six months.

Cleaning the Ice Maker

What do you need to clean the ice maker?

You will need to use one 16-ounce (473 mL) bottle of approved ice maker cleaner.  We recommend using the affresh® Ice Machine Cleaner part number W11179302.
