Causes of Filming and Etching on Glassware for Dishwashers

Filming or etching on glassware for dishwashers is a common problem for dishwasher users. The primary culprit of glassware etching is often the quality of water. Hard water, rich in minerals like calcium and magnesium, can leave unsightly residues on glass surfaces.  Sometimes, there is a water/chemical reaction with certain types of glassware.

Filming can be caused by using the wrong amount of detergent or the wrong type of detergent.  Laws were passed in 2010 limiting the amount of phosphates in household dishwasher detergents. Major manufacturers have reformulated their dishwasher detergents for the entire United States. This Eco-friendly change in detergents may cause a white film on your dishes, glassware, plastic items, utensils, and even the dishwasher tub.

NOTE: Antiques, feather-edged crystals, and similar types of china and glassware might be too delicate for automatic dishwashing. Wash by hand.

Preventing Filming and Glassware Etching

Proper dishwasher loading is key to keeping glassware free from filming and glassware etching. Place glasses on the top rack to avoid proximity to the heating element, reducing thermal shock risk. Ensure glasses don’t touch other items to prevent scratches and allow optimal water circulation.

High-quality, phosphate-free detergents are ideal for preventing residue build-up that causes filming. Additionally, use a rinse aid designed for glassware to enhance drying performance and achieve a streak-free finish.

Identifying Filming and How to Remove Dishwasher Etching from Glassware

Distinguishing between filming and etching is essential for maintaining your glassware's quality. Filming appears as a cloudy or hazy layer, often due to hard water deposits or detergent residues. In contrast, etching results in permanent dullness or roughness.

To test for etching, try to rub the film or residue off with a small amount of vinegar gently. If the film does not come off, it may be an etching or a silica film on the glassware.

Understanding these differences is crucial, as filming can often be remedied with proper cleaning, while etching is irreversible and may necessitate replacing the glassware. By recognizing these signs, you can better care for your glassware and choose appropriate cleaning methods.
