How to Clean the Dishwasher Filters

How to Clean the Filters on Your JennAir Dishwasher

Maintaining a clean dishwasher filter is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of your JennAir appliance. Food particles and debris can accumulate over time, leading to clogs and ineffective cleaning cycles. This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to clean your dishwasher filter efficiently. Whether you are a first-time user or need a refresher, our easy guide ensures your JennAir dishwasher operates smoothly, delivering spotless dishes every time.

Understanding Dishwasher Filters

Dishwasher filters play a vital role in trapping food particles and debris during wash cycles, ensuring your dishes emerge clean and sparkling. By preventing contaminants from recirculating in the wash water, filters enhance the efficiency and lifespan of your appliance. Typically, dishwashers feature either manual cleaning filters or self-cleaning filters. Manual clean filters require regular attention as they collect larger food particles that can cause clogs, while self-cleaning filters use centrifugal force and water pressure to dislodge particles automatically. Knowing your JennAir dishwasher’s filter type aids in understanding how to clean a filter in a dishwasher and maintaining optimal performance.

Maintaining a clean filter is essential for effective dishwashing and preventing unpleasant odors or potential damage to the dishwasher. Regularly inspecting and cleaning the filter ensures your appliance operates at its best, providing thoroughly cleaned dishes without residue.

The triple filter system consists of 2 parts: an upper filter assembly and a lower filter.

  • The upper filter assembly keeps oversized items and foreign objects, along with very fine food particles, out of the pump.
  • The lower filter keeps food from being recirculated onto your dishes.

Frequency of Cleaning Your Dishwasher Filter

Regular maintenance of your JennAir dishwasher filter is necessary for optimal performance. As a general rule, clean your filter once a month, particularly with frequent use. If you have a large family or run the dishwasher daily, consider cleaning the filter every two weeks to prevent debris buildup.

Signs that your filter may need cleaning include dishes emerging dirty, unpleasant odors from the appliance, visible objects or soils on the filter, degradation in cleaning performance, and/or dishes feeling gritty to the touch.

Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Your Dishwasher Filter

Gather necessary supplies: a soft sponge or cloth, warm soapy water, a small brush (such as an old toothbrush), and a towel for drying. Locate the filter, usually positioned at the bottom of the dishwasher. Carefully remove it by twisting or pulling, depending on your model. Rinse the filter under warm water to eliminate loose debris. Use the small brush to gently scrub stubborn particles, ensuring all crevices are clean. Rinse thoroughly to remove soap and debris, then allow the filter to air dry or pat it down with a towel before reinserting it into the dishwasher.

Cleaning the Filter

  1. Remove the filter by turning the Upper Filter Assembly ¼ turn counterclockwise and lifting it out.
  2. Grasp the Lower Filter in the circular opening, lift slightly, and pull forward to remove.
  3. Cleaning the filter: Rinse the filter under running water until most soils are removed. If you have hard-to-remove soils or calcium deposits from hard water, a soft brush may be required. Do not use a wire brush, scouring pad, etc., as they may damage the filters.
  4. Reinstall the filter, ensuring it is locked into place.  To avoid damage to the dishwasher, do not operate your dishwasher without the filters properly installed. Be sure the Lower Filter is securely in place, and the Upper Filter Assembly is locked into place. If the Upper Filter Assembly turns freely, it is not locked into place.
