Checking the Drain Loop Height

How to Check the Drain Loop on a JennAir Dishwasher

Ensuring the correct drain loop height on your JennAir dishwasher is crucial for its optimal performance and to prevent water from backing up into the appliance. Checking the drain loop height on dishwasher systems is vital for maintaining proper drainage, directly impacting the efficiency of your dishwasher's cleaning cycles. This guide will explain the drain loop concept, provide a step-by-step method to verify its height, and address common issues you may encounter. By following these instructions, you can help ensure that your dishwasher operates smoothly and delivers consistently clean dishes.

What is the Drain Loop?

The drain loop is a key component in your dishwasher's installation, designed to prevent wastewater from flowing back into the appliance. It is created by elevating the drain hose to form a high point, effectively blocking any backflow. This setup, known as a dishwasher high loop, ensures that dirty water from the sink or plumbing does not contaminate the clean water inside the dishwasher, thus maintaining hygiene and performance.

Establishing a proper high loop during installation is essential. It prevents siphoning, which occurs when water is drawn back into the dishwasher due to pressure changes.  Common installation errors, such as failing to secure the loop in the dishwasher drain hose at the correct height, can create low points in the line. Additionally, using an incorrect hose type or failing to ensure a firm connection may result in leaks or blockages. By understanding the drain loop concept and adhering to proper installation guidelines, you can ensure your Whirlpool dishwasher operates efficiently and reliably.

How to Check and Adjust the Drain Loop Height

Access and inspect the loop in the dishwasher drain hose, usually located at the back of your dishwasher and connected to the sink or garbage disposal. Look for any kinks or bends that might impede water flow. Carefully pull the dishwasher away from the wall if necessary, ensuring you turn off the power supply first for safety.

Measure the drain loop height. Ideally, it should be at least 20 inches from the floor, establishing what constitutes a high loop. If under 20", make sure to use an air gap.. This elevation prevents backflow, ensuring wastewater does not enter the dishwasher during operation. If the drain loop falls below this height, adjust it accordingly.
