Ice Maker Not Working - Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting your Jenn-Air Refrigerator Ice Maker
If your ice maker is not making ice, follow our guide to troubleshoot common ice maker concerns. You’ll also find preventive measures to maintain your ice maker. Read on to learn how to troubleshoot your ice maker and keep it in optimal condition.
Possible Causes of Ice Maker Issues:
- Restricted water supply
- Freezer temperature
- Ice maker is not turned on
- Water filter problems
Is the water turned on?
One of the most frequent causes of ice maker problems is water supply issues. If the water supply to your refrigerator is restricted or turned off, it can prevent the ice maker from functioning correctly. Ensure the water line is securely connected and the valve is fully opened. Additionally, check for any kinks or blockages in the water line that might hinder the water flow. Straighten the water source line to restore adequate water flow and pressure. To help reduce the chances of a pinched water line, do not push the refrigerator too far back against the wall or cabinet.
Is the freezer cold enough?
Ensure proper temperature settings in the freezer: The freezer temperature plays a crucial role in the ice-making process. If the temperature is too high, the ice maker may not function properly. Make sure the freezer temperature is set between 0 and 5 degrees Fahrenheit (-17 to -15 degrees Celsius) to ensure optimal ice production. Regularly check and adjust the temperature settings if needed.
Is the ice maker turned on?
Check to make sure the ice maker is turned "on." Reset the ice maker: Sometimes, resetting the ice maker can resolve minor issues. Locate the reset button on your ice maker (consult your manual if you’re unsure) and press and hold it for a few seconds. Wait for the ice maker to complete a cycle and see if it starts working again.
How and where you turn the ice maker on will depend on your model. Some models have a lever you move up or down, others have a switch on the underside of the ice maker, or they can be turned on/off through the controls on the display. For instructions on turning the ice maker "on" and "off," please see reference the Owner's Manual.
Was the water filter recently replaced?
If the water filter was just replaced or installed, ensure the filter was installed correctly. If the water filter is not seated properly, it can cause; no or low ice production and water not dispensing properly. Try removing the water filter and re-installing it.

Flushing the system is needed every time the filter is changed or once the refrigerator is installed to the water supply line for the first time. The air in the water system may cause dripping at the dispenser or small/hollow ice cubes.

Does your water filter need to be replaced?
A clogged or incorrectly installed water filter will reduce the water flow to the ice maker and dispenser, resulting in small ice cubes, low ice production, or decreased water flow. If the refrigerator has a water dispenser, check for a problem with the filter by doing the following:
- Dispense water using the water dispenser and note the amount of water flow.
- Remove the filter. The filter is in the base grille or inside the refrigerator compartment.
- Dispense water with the filter removed. If the water flow noticeably increases, the filter is either clogged or incorrectly installed.
If the filter is clogged and you are not able to immediately replace it, leave the filter out so the water system is in bypass mode. With the filter removed, the water system will continue to operate, bypassing the filter, and the clogged filter will not cause slow water dispensing or low ice production. However, in order to have filtered water, you will need to install a new filter.
