How to Flush the Water System in a Refrigerator

How to Flush the Water System in a JennAir Refrigerator

It’s important to flush the water system as often as you change the water filter. It is recommended that the JennAir water filter be replaced every 6 months, when the indicator light comes on, or as needed. Flushing your refrigerator water filter is a key step that reduces excess air, prepares the filter for use, and removes excess carbon.

Understanding Flushing Your Refrigerator Water Filter

The flushing process typically requires running water through the filter for a designated time to expel initial carbon dust produced during manufacturing and remove trapped air from the system. This step activates the filter, ensuring that the water flowing from your refrigerator is free from unwanted particles and tastes great. If the water filter is not flushed after replacement, the air in the water system may cause dripping at the dispenser, small/hollow ice cubes, or a cloudy appearance in the water quality.

One or two drops of water immediately after dispensing is normal and will end shortly. It may be necessary to hold the container under the dispenser for 2 to 3 seconds after releasing the dispenser button.

It may be necessary to hold the container under the dispenser for 2 to 3 seconds after releasing the dispenser button.

Steps to Flushing the Water System:

To flush the system, you will need a sturdy container

  1. Use a sturdy container to depress, hold the water dispenser lever for 5 seconds, and then release it for 5 seconds. As air is removed, water may spurt from the dispenser.
  2. Repeat the process until water starts to flow steadily and all the air is out of the water line.
  3. Continue this process (5 seconds on, 5 seconds off) until at least 1 - 4 gallons of water have been dispensed.

How much water should be dispensed?

The amount of water needed to flush the water filter varies depending on the specific filter.  Some filters need 1, 2, or 4 gallons dispensed for a proper flush; refer to the water filter for specific guidelines.  Examples: EveryDrop Water Filter A requires 1 gallon, whereas most other EveryDrop Water Filters recommend 4 gallons.

After flushing the water system, allow 24 hours for the refrigerator to cool and chill the water. Then, dispense enough water every week to maintain a fresh supply.
