Ice Cubes are Grey or Off Colored - Column

Possible Solutions

Is the correct water supply line installed?

New plumbing connections, such as PVC pipes and fittings, can cause discolored or off-flavored ice. If this occurs, discard the first three batches of ice and flush additional water through the water dispenser.  Verify the unit has been hooked up to the cold water line. Installing the refrigerator up to the hot water line could cause discoloration in the ice cubes.

Verify that you are using one of the recommended water supply lines:

  • Copper Water Supply Line
  • A Water Supply Line purchased from JennAir

Depending on the household water supply properties and the type of supply line used by the consumer, water properties may cause different types of supply lines to react in different ways, resulting in bad odor or taste in the refrigeration water and ice systems.

How is the water quality?

The quality of your ice and water will be only as good as that of the water supplied to your ice maker or water dispenser.  Poor water quality can cause grey or discolored ice and water.  Installing a water filter may help remove the minerals.

Avoid connecting the ice maker to a softened water supply. Water softener chemicals can lead to poor-quality ice. If a softened water supply cannot be avoided, ensure the water softener is operating properly and well-maintained.

Does the ice bin need to be cleaned?

If the ice bin is not regularly cleaned, ice particles and debris can fuse to the ice cubes, causing grey or discolored ice.  The ice bin should be cleaned with water and a soft cloth. Ensure the ice bin is fully dry before returning it to the freezer.

Does the water filter need to be changed?

Grey or discolored ice could be a sign of a filter needing replacement. The water filter should be replaced every 6 months based on a flow rate of 0.75 gpm-0.80 gpm (1.89- 2.27 Lpm) that filters 200 gallons (757 L) of water.

NOTE: If the filter is not installed correctly, water may dispense at a lower flow rate, resulting in slower ice production. Improper filter installation may also cause the water filter housing to leak.

Was the water filter flushed?

Once the filter has been replaced, it is important to flush the water system. This process removes excess air, prepares the filter for use, and removes excess carbon. The air in the water system may cause dripping at the dispenser, small/hollow ice cubes, or a cloudy appearance in the water quality.

  1. Use a sturdy container to depress, hold the water dispenser lever for 5 seconds, and then release it for 5 seconds. As air is removed, water may spurt from the dispenser.
  2. Repeat the process until water starts to flow at a steady pass and all the air is out of the water line.
  3. Continue this process (5 seconds on, 5 seconds off) until at least 1 gallon of water has been dispensed.

After flushing the water system, allow 24 hours for the refrigerator to cool and chill the water. Then, dispense enough water every week to maintain a fresh supply.
